Weeton Show's Blog: Young Handlers
15th July 2009 Sunday the 26th of July sees the welcome return of Poultry classes to the Weeton Show after many years of absence. Chairman David Beresford was surprised and delighted to find that many people in the area keep chickens, so this year with the help of Edward Boothman of Silsden, the classes will go ahead. David said that this is very much an amateur affair so that anyone who has something with feathers, wings and two legs can enter. Children are encouraged to have a go with their pet hen or cockerel. The sad story from David is that last week Mr Fox paid his chickens a visit and now his prize hen is no more and Mr Fox and his cubs have had a fine dinner! Josh and "Chuck Norris" square off for the camera! Children's play is also new on the agenda at the show with the introduction of a children's corner which includes jugglers, circus acts, face painting and craft activities. The corner is out of the sun and rain and all activities are free. The Weeton Show feels it must make the show attractive to the younger end of the community as these are the ones who will take the show forward in the future, indeed the youngest member of their hard working committee is just eighteen. As well as the children’s corner, the Show has many other attractions. It is a fantastic day out for all the family with horses, dogs, pets, chickens, sheep, vegetables and many arts & crafts. Main ring entertainment this year includes a family act demonstrating amazing feats of strength, tailwaggers dog agility team and a display from the Mount Grace Gundogs plus much more. There is something for everyone. [Picture of Josh Harris 3, with Chuck Norris his Orpington Cockerel]
2nd June 2009 An epic battle of wills begins as Emily puts the halter on her lamb for the first time and no one moves!!! After much struggling and perseverance ... peace at last and they're the best of friends.
3rd April 2009 Three children from Weeton and Huby Pre-school are starting preparations for this year’s Weeton Show. Daisy and Lucky, two orphan lambs, are being cared for by Alice Buckley (3) and Joshua Harris (3), both three years old. The orphan lambs will be entered in the Weeton Show’s Lamb Young Handlers’ class (new for 2009) and shown by their new carers. Poultry classes are also a new attraction and Josh is working hard to bring Loki the Hen up to the grade to show at this year's show. The Show is a fantastic day out for all the family with horses, dogs, pets, chickens, sheep, vegetables and many arts and crafts, plus main ring entertainment. For the first time this year, the Show will be running a children’s corner with free and fun activities. There really is something for everyone of all ages. Check back for progress reports on Emily, Alice and Josh as they prepare for their big day on Sunday the 26th July 2009.
